A BRIEF FAMILY HISTORY

Our family comes from Walloonia, a French-speaking region of southern Belgium to the south of the Flemish region of Flanders. The yellow flag with the red rooster  is the flag of Walloonia

In the 16th century the Walloons devised new methods for smelting iron in blast furnaces. For example, they mixed the iron ore with charcoal which resulted in higher-quality iron.  As they were also specialists in the production of charcoal, as well as expert blacksmiths, their skills were much in demand throughout Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, and many Walloons emigrated to other countries, e.g. Sweden. 

Sweden was - and still is - a Lutheran country but the Walloons were Calvinists (both churches are of course Protestant and Reformist). The first Walloons in Sweden spoke Walloon, a Langue d'Oeil dialect/language that developed from Vulgar Latin in the 6th century BC after the fall of the Roman Empire. 

Our family name was originally spelled Hubinet, but Swedish ministers often spelled it with a German 'y' (ü) and two 't:s' in the parish records to make the name easier to pronounce. However, I have found many other spellings in parish books and other public records, e.g. Hybinet, Hybinett, Hybinette, Hubinett and Hybineth. 

There are four branches of the Hübinette family in Sweden. Ours is known as the Iggesund Branch, named after the iron mill at Iggesund. The other three are the Lövsta, Roslag I and Roslag II branches.

The father of Aman Hubinet (see below) is believed to have been Noe Hubinet. He was probably born around 1580.  

Aman Hubinet is the founding ancestor of all Swedish Hübinettes. Aman was born ca. 1610 and came to Sweden in the early 17th century. He was a master smelter  (a title that passed on from the father to the eldest son) at the iron mill of Österby between 1638 and 1651. He then moved to the mill at Gimo where he worked until 1656. It is not known when he died, but parish records show that he was still alive in 1679 when his wife died. Aman had five sons, Noak, Johan, Jacob, Aman and Antony. As far as is known, Noak did not have any children. The other sons founded the four branches of the Hübinette family mentioned above:

* Jacob     (Roslag I)
* Aman     (Roslag II)
* Antony   (Iggesund)

Antony Hubinet married Maria Bayard, whose father was a Walloon hammersmith. Other Walloon families that married into our family are Martin and Boivie. Antony worked at the mills in Österby between 1656 and 1680 and in Vattholma between 1681 and 1685. Antony and Maria had one child, a son by the name of Claes. 

Master hammersmith Claes Antonsson-Hübinette was born on May 13, 1659 in Österbybruk. At this time, Swedish ministers were attempting to get rid of the foreign-sounding Walloon names by giving Walloon children new surnames when their births were recorded in the parish records. These surnames were formed in accordance with the traditional Swedish custom of name-giving, i.e. - depending on their gender - children were given a surname consisting of their father's christian name (usually in the genitive case (-s)), followed by '-son' or '-dotter' ('son' or 'daughter'). Thus, Clas - who was the son of Anton - was given the name Antonsson. He married Chatarina Boevie (b. 1663, d. 1738) of Lövsta bruk. They had eight children (see the family tree below) and their eldest son Jakob carried on our family line. Clas died in Iggesund on September 9, 1737.

Master smelter Jakob Claesson Hübinette was born in July 1688 at Österbybruk. He was married three times, first to Karin Karlsdotter, then to Kristin Hindricksdotter (who was also a Walloon) and finally to Karin Andersdotter. He had four children by his second wife (see the family tree), the eldest of whom was Hindrick. Jakob died in Iggesund on January 18, 1771.

Master smelter Hindrick Hybinett was born on October 25,  1719 in Iggesund. In 1743 he married Christin Jonsdotter, b. 1719, and they had two sons and five daughters. Hindrick died on March 14, 1791 in Iggesund. His son Jakob inherited the Master Smelter title.

Master smelter Jakob Hybinette, b. on April 29, 1756 in Iggesund. In 1786 he married Margita Larsdotter from Sveden Enånger. He worked at the mills in Iggesund, Nianfors and Strömbacka. Jakob died on February 17, 1840 in Strömbacka. Jakob and Margita had five children and their son Lars learnt his father's trade. 

Furnace master Lars Hübinette, b. on August 11, 1789 in Iggesund, d. May 5, 1853 in Galtström. Lars worked at the iron mills in Moviken, Bjuråker, Gnarp and Galtström. In Bjuråker he married Anna Maria Palm, b. 1788 d. 1853. Their son Lars Wilhelm  was born in 1825 in Gnarp.

LARS WILHELM HÜBINETTE

Lars Wilhelm is the father of Gustav Ulrik, Wilhelmina, Frank, Selma, Edla, Justina, Andrietta and Lars Otto and the common ancestor of all the people listed on the rest of this website.

Lars Wilhelm Hübinette, was born on November 8, 1825 in Gnarp, and died on March 15, 1903 in Kvissleby, Njurunda. Lars Wilhelm became a jobbing smith and married Ulrika Eleonora Ward. Jobbing smiths produced tools, chains etc. out of forgeable iron.  He lived in Svartvik between 1833 and 1850, when he moved to Östersund. In 1855 the family moved back to Svartvik. Lars and Elonora had eight children. Lars Wilhelm died on March 15, 1903 in Kvissleby, Njurunda Parish.

 

Ulrika Eleonora Ward  was born in January 18, 1829 in Timrå and died on October 2, 1914 in Kvissleby, Njurunda Parish.

Three of the eight children emigrated to the USA, viz. Wilhelmina, Selma and Frans, and a decade or so later, all but one of Gustav Ulrik's eight children had also left Sweden for the USA, as had two of Edla's and one of Andrietta's children.

                 The first members of our family to emigrate to the USA were three of Lars Wilhelm Hübinette's
                 children: Wilhelmina Eleonora, Selma Ulrika and Frans Willehad Hübinette  (the aunts and uncle of
                 Jenny, Ellen, Levida, Beda, Fritz, Ed and Herbert, i.e. the next generation of emigrants, which also
                 included one of Andrietta's sons and three of Edla's children).

                 Frans was the first Hübinette to leave Sweden (in 1882), and six years later his sisters Selma and
                 Wilhelmina joined him in Joliet, IL.

GUSTAV ULRIK HÜBINETTE

Gustav Ulrik Hübinette was born on September 8, 1849 in Galtström, Njurunda parish, Västernorrland County and died on July 22, 1923 in Svartvik.

Maria Lovisa (Lisa) Hollsten was born on January 29, 1852 in Torsby bruk, Fryksände Parish, Värmland County and died on  March 21, 1927.  Her father was Adam Hollsten, b. 1825 in Lysvik, and her mother was Christin Hultenberg, b. 1819. She had five brothers and sisters at the time of her birth, Stina Cajsa (1844), Adam (1846), Carolina (1848), Emma (1850) and Mathilda Christina (1854). Five died at a young age and all the others - except my grandmother Ruth - emigrated to the USA between 1892 and 1913 (see The Next Emigrants below). The photos were probably taken in the 1870s.

Times were hard in Sweden in the late 19th century, and the family moved a lot in search of better living conditions. Gustav Ulrik was a hard-working, dependable craftsman of the kind much sought after by the saw and iron mills. He and his wife, and most of his children, were baptists. They were married in 1873 and their first child Eleonora (Ellen) was born the same year in Matfors, Njurunda Parish, Västernorrland County.

Their first son, Gustav Färdinand, who was born in 1875  in Svartvik, Njurunda Parish, died there at the age of only two months. Their second daughter, Olga, was born in 1876 in Svartvik. On November 23, 1878 the family moved to Nohlby, Njurunda Parish where their third daughter, Edla, was born in 1878. About a year later the family moved to Stockvik, where both Olga and Edla died in 1880 (scarlet fever) and 1881, respectively. 

Levida was born in Stockvik in 1880 and two years later, in 1882, Jenny and her twin brother Edvin were born in Essvik, another sawmill community quite close to Stockvik (GID 2066.26.36200).

Beda was born in Fullersta, Söderköping in central Sweden (Östergötland County) in 1885, the same year as Jenny's twin brother Edvin died there of meningitis at the age of four. However, there is no record of the family ever moving to Fullersta. They were still registered in Essvik in 1885 and both Beda's birth and Edwin's death are recorded in the Essvik parish records. There is a note 'Söderköping' in those records, but not in the column where moves from the parish are recorded (GID 2066.25.5800). Maybe Gustav Ulrik was only temporarily employed at the Fullersta Sawmill ?

In 1887 the family moved from Essvik to Almvik, Törnsfall Parish, Kalmar County in central Sweden (GID 171.21.37900), where Edvin (named after his brother Edwin who had died two years earlier) and Mary Mathilda were born in 1887 and 1879, respectively, and on November 8, 1890 they moved down to the east coast, to Blankaholm Sawmill, Hjorted Parish, Kalmar County (GID 54.42.63900), the birthplace of Ruth (1891), Herbert (1892)and Fritz (1894).

In 1890 the Hübinette household consisted of Gustav Ulrik, Maria Lovisa and their children Ellen, Levida, Jenny, Beda, Ed and Mary, according to the 1890 census for Kalmar County (Blankaholm). In 1891 the first emigrant in the family, Ellen, left Blankaholm for the US. The next family member to emigrate was Jenny in 1897.  She was only fifteen at the time and was accompanied on the journey by her uncle Frank Hubenet (see below).

The owner of Blankaholm Sawmill, Consul Gustav Broms, also owned the iron mine at Malmberget in the
very north of Sweden and in 1899 he asked Gustav Ulrik to come and work for him there. Gustav Ulrik was very reluctant to move to Malmberget as he had heard about the problems that were plaguing the mining districts, such as poor housing and heavy drinking among miners. However, when Consul Broms promised Gustav Ulrik a new apartment in Malmberget, and also a retirement cottage on a large piece of land he had bought in Tornedalen, north of Haparanda, Gustav Ulrik agreed to take the job. First, however, Consul Broms needed Gustav Ulrik's services at a brick works in Holmfors near present-day Boden, and on July 12, 1899 the family traveled up to the north of Sweden by train. The 1900 Census for Norrbotten County lists Gustav Ulrik, Maria Lovisa, Beda, Ed, Ruth, Herbert and Fritz. Mary Mathilda had died in 1894 in Blankaholm, Levida left home in 1900, married Erik Larsson and moved to Boden (and later to Malmberget), and Jenny and Ellen had emigrated to the USA.

There were three apartments in the building, two downstairs and one upstairs. The photo was probably taken around 1905. The house is still standing (2007) , albeit slightly modified.

On December 19, 1902 the family moved to Malmberget where Gustav Ulrik worked for the next eighteen years. Ed emigrated in 1906 together with Levida and Erik, and in 1910, my grandmother Ruth left home and moved to Jönköping in the south of Sweden. Fritz left Sweden for the USA in 1911 and Herbert was the last of the children to leave home when he emigrated in 1913. However, he returned to Sweden only eleven months later following a relapse of TB. Herbert died in the Malmberget Sanatorium on November 9, 1914.

The promise of a retirement cottage was never fulfilled. When Consul Broms died, his widow bequeathed the land to the County Agricultural Society, which leased it out to farmers, so instead of retiring in the north of Sweden, Gustav Ulrik and Maria Lovisa moved back to Svartvik near Sundsvall, on February 23, 1920.

Gustav Ulrik died in Svartvik on July 22, 1923 and Maria Lovisa on March 21, 1927.

EDLA MARIA HÜBINETTE-ERIKSSON

Edla Maria Hübinette  was born on June 26, 1853 in Östersund, Jämtland County.  On May 25, 1874 she was  married to Jonas (Ersson) Eriksson. She died on February 6, 1923.

Jonas Ersson (Eriksson) was born on February 5, 1851 in Vännäs, Västerbotten County and died on March 12, 1902. Jonas' mother was Cajsa Magdalena Johansdotter (parents: Johan Johansson and Magdalena Persdotter) b Feb 20, 1813 in Umeå Rural Parish, m. to Olof Pehrsson, b 1795. Jonas had seven brothers and sisters: Carl Johan, Kajsa Magdalena b June 16, 1832, Anna Lisa b Jan 15, 1843, Erik b Sept 2, 1845, Johannes b June 16, 1848 and Carl Petter b March 12, 1853 (after whom Jonas' son, Carl Petter (see below), was probably named)

WILHELMINA ELEONORA HÜBINETTE- STROMBECK

Wilhelmina Hübinette was born on August 24, 1855 in Svartvik, Västernorrland County, Sweden, and died on February 29, 1928 in Joliet, IL.

Per Gustav Strömbeck (Peter Strombeck) was born on March 10, 1857 in Attmar, Västernorrland County, Sweden and died on May 15, 1927 in Joliet, IL.

Per and   Wilhelmina were married on November 20, 1881 in Svartvik, Sweden. The family lived in Svartvik near Sundsvall until they emigrated and their first three children - Artur, Ivar and Eleanor (Nora) Levida - were born there. Per Gustav emigrated to the USA on April 25, 1887 (Stockholm -> New York) and Wilhelmina and the children left Sweden (Gothenburg->New York) on July 13 the following year, accompanied by her younger sister Selma Hübinette (see below).  Wilhelmina seems to have gone by the name Minnie  in the USA and Per Gustav called himself Peter (see e.g. the 1910 census records below).

Märta Andrietta Hübinette  was born on February 2, 1860 in Svartvik, Västernorrland County. She died from pneumonia on May 26, 1893.

On Nov 9, 1895, a year and a half after Andrietta had died, Victor married Maria Evelina Engblom  b Oct 26, 1864. He did not have any children by her, so the four children listed below are all by Andrietta.

FRANS (FRANK) WILLEHAD HÜBINETTE (HUBENET)

Frank Hübinette  was born on December 30, 1862 in Svartvik and died on November 2, 1943 in Chicago. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Joliet.

First marriage: Ellen Anderson on Sept 27, 1890 (b. January 1863 in Sweden, d. Nov 17, 1906, buried together with Frank in Oakwood Cemetery, Joliet, lot 62, 24 grave 3).

A Swedish emigration database shows that Frank emigrated to the USA on December 1, 1882. He left Sweden via Gothenburg for Lockport, IL. As the Ellis Island database only contains records for the years 1892-1927, I have not been able to establish when or on what ship he arrived in the US. 

He first worked in the stone quarries at Joliet and was later a clerk at a coal company. In 1890 he set up his own coal business at 603 Cass Street in Joliet, Illinois. Frank paid the passage for many, if not all, of his relatives who emigrated to the United States. He was the one to shorten the name to Hubenet, which incidentally is close to the original spelling of our family name (see under 'Brief Family History'). His address at the time of his wife Ellen's death was 309 Garnsey Ave, Joliet, IL. After selling his coal company in 19??, he bought a hotel which he ran until 19??

In 1895 Frank visited Sweden, and when he returned to the USA he brought his niece, Jenny Hübinette, with him. They left Malmö on August 15, 1895 and arrived in New York on August 29 on the Teutonic (see the Ellis Island file under Jenny Hübinette below)

SELMA ULRIKA HÜBINETTE (EKSTRÖM)

Selma Hübinette was born on April 29, 1866 in Svartvik, Sweden, and died on October 20, 1940 in Joliet, IL.   Selma emigrated to the USA on July 13, 1888, together with her sister Wilhelmina Eleonora (see above).

On September 27, 1890 Selma was married to Abel Ekström. He was born on May 6, 1862 in Sävar, Sweden and died on April 30, 1939 in Chicago, IL. Since Abel left Sweden two years before Selma (in 1886 (May 28, Gothenburg-New York), it would seem that they met in the USA. Selma was a midwife (she delivered all of Ellen (Hübinette) and Martin Alexander's children) and Abel was an electrician. The family lived in Joliet, IL.

Gustav Ulrik and Maria Lovisa Hübinette had thirteen children. Five of them died at a young age,
and all the others - except my grandmother Ruth - emigrated to the USA between 1891 and 1913.

In addition, two of Edla Hübinette's sons and one daughter emigrated, as did one of Andrietta Hübinette's sons (see Edla and Andrietta above).

Eleonora Hübinette was born on May 25, 1873 at Matfors bruk, County of Västernorrland and died on December 31, 1963. She emigrated from Blankaholm, Kalmar County to the US on August 31, 1891 and on November 23, 1895 she married Martin Alexandersson.

Martin Alexander(son) was born on March 30, 1866 in Gerum, Sweden, and died on October 1, 1922. According to the Swedish database 'Emigranten' a Martin Alexanderson emigrated to the USA on April 20, 1888 (Gothenburg-Boston), but I have yet to confirm that this person is Eleonora's husband. From 1909 and until his death in 1922, Martin ran his own business in Joliet, 'Alexander Sash and Door Manufacturing Company'. Click on the button to see a document written by Eleonora about her husband    Click on this button for information on Martin's Swedish ancestors

Martin and Ellen's home in Joliet

Around 1925 Eleonora visited her relatives in Sweden. The photo below was taken in a park in Umeå. The two ladies to the right of, and slightly below, Ellen are Maria Lovisa (Eleonora's mother) and her sister Ruth (my grandmother).

Levida Hübinette was born on October 18, 1880 in Stockvik, Västernorrland County, Sweden. She died on April 15, 1956 in Joliet, and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Joliet.

In 1900, Levida married Eric Larsson, b. April 21, 1875 in Ås, Jämtland County, Sweden, d. June 14, 1934 in Grand Rapids, NY   Click on this button for more information about the Larsson family and Erik's ancestors.

                    The saw mill in Stockvik where Levida's father Gustav Ulrik worked as a blacksmith when Levida
                     was born. Stockvik translates into English as Log Bay, and it is easy to see why the place was thus
                     named. 

Levida and Erik were married on December 26, 1900 in Boden, Överluleå Parish. Two of their children were born there, Johan Rudolf on March 24, 1901 and Bror Georg on May 4, 1902 (they were actually born in Gällivare, possibly at the hospital there, but the family lived in Boden at the time of their births).

On December 26, 1902 the family moved from Boden to Gällivare together with Levida's parents. According to Gällivare parish records, Erik and Levida then moved to Råneå on March 19, 1906 but
I have not been able to find them in the Råneå parish records. It would seem that they decided to emigrate to the USA instead, together with Levida's brother, Edvin (Ed) Hübinette. 

They traveled by train from Gällivare to Narvik in Norway and then on to Trondheim, where they boarded S/S Spero (Wilson Line) on 4 April, 1906. Their emigration was handled by the White Star Line representative in Trondheim, Gerhard Dahl, and their destination is given as 'Joliet, Illinois' in the Norwegian emigration records. Their tickets had been - or were to be - paid for in the USA, probably by Levida's uncle Frank Hubenet. 

The Spero took them to Hull, England. The Larssons then traveled by train from Hull to Liverpool via Leeds. On April 13, they sailed from Liverpool on the Cymric and arrived in Boston on April 22, 1906.

From Boston they travelled to Joliet where they lived the rest of their lives.

	Erik and Levida's home was at 1306 Raynor Avenue. As a widow, Levida lived at 503 N. Hickory St.
	Salem Home (Swedish Lutheran Home) at 1313 Rowell Avenue in Joliet, where Levida lived until she died in 1956.

              First marriage:   Muzette Hunt on October 20, 1924 in St Joseph, MI.  Muzette was
              born ca. 1890 and died on August 1, 1948 in Chicago. George and Muzette lived in
              Hammond, IN at 885 Michigan Ave. No children.

              Second marriage: On May 6, 1950  in Chicago, IL to Ruby Ingeborg Carney
              (Hubenet) (Frank Hubenet's daughter, see above), b. April 26, 1904, d. May 22, 1998
               No children.  George and Ruby lived in Calumet City, IL.

Jenny Hübinette was born on November 16, 1882 in Essvik, Njurunda Parish, Västernorrland County, Sweden. She had a twin brother, Edvin, who died at the age of four (in 1885). Jenny's  emigration was recorded in the Hjorted parish records on August 5, 1885. She was only 13 years old at the time and was accompanied on the journey by her uncle, Frank Hubenet (see 'The First Generation of Emigrants' in the main menu) who was visiting his parents in Sweden. They left Malmö on August 15, 1885 for Hull, England, and arrived in New York on the Teutonic (see 'Emigrant Ships' in the main menu) on August 29. Jenny's husband was Victor Andersson. They were married on September 26, 1900 in Will County. Victor was born on March 25, 1878 in the parish of Torpa, Åsby, Östergötland County, Sweden. He died on October 3, 1953 in Joliet, IL.  Click here for more information about Victor's family in Sweden

In 1921 Jenny and Victor, their son Carl and daughter Genevieve visited Jenny's parents in Svartvik. The photo below was taken in Svartvik. The man with the beard is Jenny's father Gustav Ulrik Hübinette and Jenny's mother, Maria Lovisa, is holding Genevieve on her lap. The young man in the middle is Carl. Sitting next to him are Fritz, who returned to Sweden about a year later (in May 1922, see below), and Jenny. The two women on the far left and right are probably Swedish friends of the family.
