Karl Jakob worked as a farmhand until December 8, 1848 when he was admitted to the army as a r

After his discharge from the army, Karl Jakob worked as a fisherman, probably in the nearby fishing village of Skeppsvik. He changed his last name from Eriksson to Ekström around 1850.  Karl Jakob and Maria had ten children (see column VIII in the table below), two of whom died as infants. All the others, six sons and two daughters, emigrated to the USA (and later also all of their grandchildren). Their oldest son, Karl Jonas, moved back to Sweden in 1884, as did one of their grandsons, Johan Oskar.
