Dear Hildegarde and Ellen,

I hope that you will forgive me for not writing before. We have been rather busy since we came back, painting and doing other things around the house that didn’t get done this spring. I send you a pair of pillow cases and I hope that you will like them, also some patterns I copied tatting, made it in coral and white, very pretty. We certainly enjoyed ourselves, we’re sorry that we couldn’t have stayed a little longer. Would have liked to have gone over to Beda’s. Sorry that we didn’t get to pay Levida a visit to say good bye to them. We got home Sunday night about 11:45, had a nice trip, Carl[1]was very tired. What did you think of the pictures, real good of the bro and sisters. Grant Hubenet and his wife were over Sunday evening for a while. Bert’s family were here a week ago Saturday, and spent the afternooon and evening. Hilde, did you save me a clipping out of the paper about Bev’s wedding? I canned peaches yesterday, off of our tree in the back yard. Today I’m going to put up some bread and butter pickles. In another two or three weeks the grapes will be ready. We have a grapevine on the fence. Received your card from Mackinae Island. Glad that you enjoyed yourself. Well, I must go to work now. Say hello to everybody. Must thank you both again for your swell hospitality. Hope you can visit us next summer.

Letter from Ed to his sister Ruth in Sweden (translated from Swedish)

                                               Detroit, Mich  January 1, 1955

 Dear Sister Ruth,

We had a letter from Beda that Oscar is dead. We are so sad for you and your family.

I don’t know if you can understand what I’m writing. As you know I have been married to an American woman for 35 years and she took care of Bertel and he is a fine boy now, he has a nice family. I could have written this letter in English but I thought you would understand it better if I wrote in Swedish. I am not very well. I have arthritis, like Father had when I was visiting them in Sweden. When we get old we get all that xx[1]

Do you remember when I worked at the big workshop and Mother was out washing our clothes? You were supposed to have dinner ready for me when I got home. However, you had no potatoes on the stove for me and I got angry at you for that. Then when I went into town to go to America, you stood there crying. I forgive you. Don’t show my letter to your children because I can’t spell in Swedish. Now Mamie will write something in English for you. She heard that your boys can read English. I hope you can read my handwriting. All the best to you and your family from your old brother

 We were certainly surprised to hear of Oscar’s death and it must have been a great shock to you. We send our deepest sympathy to you and your family. We received your nice Christmas card and the picture. You all look so nice. Bertil and Family were with us for Christmas dinner. He took some pictures of us in our parlour. If they turn out alright we will send you one.

 Dear Sister Ellen + family,

 How are you all? I was sitting here thinking about you so I told Mamie that I was going to write to you and let you know that we are still alive. I am ashamed that I have not written to you before. Ellen, you don’t know how we appreciate your kindness to us. When we come to Joliet, Mamie thinks I have the best sisters in the world. I had a letter from Beda and she sent me some Swedish papers with letters from Ruth and Levida rolled up in them. I sure enjoy the papers. I can’t get over Beda, how good she is for all she went through. Well Ellen, I’m going to sign off and let Mamie finish. Say hello to the rest of you girls. Good-bye and let us hear from you.

Dear Ellen and Hildur,

I am not only appointed to finish the letter but to copy Ed’s letter for him. He says he can’t spell or write good any more.  I wanted him to send it anyway, but no dice. 

We were out to Bert’s for Thanksgiving, had a nice time and we enjoyed the children so much. The two oldest ones had Ed telling them different things in Swedish and singing Swedish songs. It was something to hear them singing along with Ed.  

We saw Ebba, Arlene + Ruby and Gen when they were here for Halloween over at Will Hubenet’s. They all looked good. Too bad that you did not come with Beda and Levida this summer. It would have been so nice to have been all together. We were sorry that the girls couldn’t stay longer. We sure enjoyed their visit. Maybe next summer you and Hildur can pay us a visit.

I am busy crocheting and knitting, as usual. We got an announcement card of Beverly’s baby this morning. I am sending her something next week.

Well, it looks like I have run out of news so I guess that I will have to bring this to a close. Hoping this will find you in good health.
